I'm not going to sit here and try to tell you that I'm some porn historian, or that I should know more about the industry than most, but I do have a general understanding of how things have progressed over the years, where technology fits in, and maybe even style of the different eras. Today I will be reviewing the website Evil Angel, which is actually the home site for the production company known as… Evil Angel. The reason I bring up the historian comment is because I think in these days, the concept of the hardcore studio might not really mean a whole lot. In my personal experience, when adult DVD's were in their prime, is when the studio was at a prime itself. I'm aware that film and VHS movies were also probably partly produced by studios, but when DVD's came along, there just seemed to be a boom of high profile, big budget movies that were coming out. They were almost like Hollywood productions, I also think it's when porn went more mainstream. The internet sure did change a whole lot of things though, it may have diluted the industry as a whole, but the DVD is still a big player, even if at times it's in a different format. The reason I bring all this up is because the Evil Angel website is basically an online collection of their DVD titles, all in one place, and all for one price. You may not actually have to put a DVD into your player anymore, but the format and the concept of studio releases is still alive and well. Evil Angel is not some company that jumped on the internet bandwagon, they are legit, and well known in the industry - at least in my opinion, but I don't think many would argue with that.
The inner workings, and overall concept of this site is pretty standard these days for a DVD studio type of website. What they normally do is take their whole collection of DVD's and add each scene separately as an update, which of course will end up being the full DVD available. As they produce more DVD titles, they will also add those scenes, and all of their extras as well. It's hard to say if the entire studio collection is actually all available at the same time, it's just way to hard to verify, but I suspect that there will always be a portion of titles that are slated to be added to the site at a later time. Which makes sense in most ways, even if they had everything ready to go at one time, it kinda takes away from the way membership sites usually work. As it stands now, Evil Angel updates their site with new scenes multiple times per day, usually between 3 to 5 updates based on looking at what's current. What I like is that they don't just update consecutive scenes from one title at one time, all in a row, they take several titles and update those scenes on different days. It's just a small difference between just adding one DVD a day, or adding one scene from 5 DVD's for five days, but it adds variety to the day, it's kind of nice to see the mix of material, it's like no day is wasted, even if one or two of the updates aren't something that would interest you. The photo updates come in a lot slower, but they are not date stamped, so it's a bit harder to see what they are have been doing. As primarily a DVD site, I'd say that the photo content is not entirely expected, it's nice to have it though, and I realize it doesn't have equal importance to them as the videos.
Logging in to the members area, what I saw was a pretty clean set up, with a theme and style that seemed appropriate for this studio. I also noticed the array of navigation tools that were offered, and it looked like navigation would be pretty straight forward. The most common place to start is the home page, which gives us a quick run down of what's the newest, other new updates, most viewed, and in this case, upcoming updates. I think most people can quickly decide which are of the site they want to head to first, for this site, the most basic choices to be Scenes, Movies, Pictures, or if you have a favorite model, the Pornstars index. For the most part the content is arranged in the order they have been added to the site, each section has slightly different ways to rearrange the content, there are drop down menus that are relevant to what you are looking at, and category tags as well. For the videos there is a category list that pretty much sums everything up for you, even a number count so you know how many scenes each category holds. What I didn't find was an actual search feature, which is a bit of good and bad thing for me. I tend to not like keyword search features all that much, but I do notice when they aren't there. In this case, there is a whole category list that has everything, so you don't really need to search for a keyword anyway. I think overall the navigation tools work well, I do think they could be improved on though, I like to see more advanced features that give me more options for layering categories and attributes to really narrow things down.
If the date stamps are correct, the first scene update was the first day of the year 2000, January 1. Pretty convenient, right? Well, it does make sense, and it's pretty cool, the problem is that it doesn't tell the whole story, and by that, we don't really know the production date of the scene, which could make a big difference in terms of quality. I'm sure some research could be done, but if you are anything like me, you kinda want to just move things along. What I'm getting at, is that the first update of the site is already 14 years old, when it comes to progress, that's an eternity. As you move along and get into older updates, you will certainly see a drop in quality, less options, and probably different styles of scenes as well - this should always be expected anyway though. I'm glad to see that they are pretty current with what they are doing with the videos though, you can expect to find HD quality scene updates, with great looking options for formats, and other sizes if you desire, the current streaming videos look great too. For a DVD site, I thought the newer photo sets looked very good, they pretty much offer us everything that the competition does, big sizes, multiple viewing options, and a downloadable zip file as well. I think overall the browser viewable photos could have looked a bit better, but the zipped images do look better. And just like the videos, you'll probably notice a drop in quality as you go back, but without date stamps, it was kind of hard to see exactly how far back you are.
It's kind of hard to comment on the specific entertainment of this site, because there is so much of a variety, that as a member, you are probably going to find content that does not appeal to you, but probably find plenty of stuff that does. That's what's great about a site like this, with a whole studios worth of content at your disposal, you really do have a lot of options. What I thought was important was the actual quality of the entertainment, like I said before, this isn't some fly by night amateur site that is just trying to put a product out there, they are a big name studio with resources to create awesome looking DVD's. Evil Angel has allowed us to offer our users a discounted membership rate, I think that, coupled with the high level of quality, and the strong numbers of material they bring, it's hard for me to not recommend this site. There are some things here and there where I thought things could be improved, but those are just small drop in the bucket things that don't really affect the site experience all that much. This was a fun review to do. Enter Evil Angel.
